YOUNG star Vinnie-Ray Guthrie has been given the chance to represent his country at this summer’s Junior Motocross World Championship in Spain.

Echosport last week reported on the 10-year-old’s excellent start to the season, and it appears his top form didn’t go unnoticed by the national selectors either.

The Weymouth schoolboy is currently competing in the Netherlands but is set to travel to Madrid in July when the Spanish city hosts the world championships.

However, Guthrie, who leads the 65cc British Youth Nationals and claimed a fourth place in the latest round of the Dutch equivalent on Sunday, faces a challenge before he even gets to ride for Great Britain in Spain.

The Auto-Cycle Union, the governing body of motorcycle sport in the UK, will pay for Guthrie’s race entry fees but his parents have to fund the trip to Spain, and that includes transporting the youngster’s bikes and spare parts.

“It’s expensive,” said dad Dan. “We get a little bit of help with things like kit but travelling expenses are the killer.

“There must be some companies out there that can help a young kid ride his bike.”
