SIMON Browne has given a frank assessment of Weymouth’s current plight and is fully aware that something must be done for the club to move forward.

The Seasiders’ all-rounder was part of the Redlands outfit who were rolled over for just 46 at home against Stalbridge on Saturday, in a contest that was over in rapid time.

Browne did his best to occupy the crease while wickets tumbled around him and also revealed that he had an added incentive to try and bat time.

“I was there trying to put a brave face on it with the umpires because my wife was doing the teas on Saturday,” he told Echosport.

“The umpires were saying to me ‘will the teas be here?’ I said ‘well, at this moment in time, no’ knowing full well that my wife was due to turn up at between half-past three and four.

“At about two o’clock I quickly had to get on the phone to her and say ‘get yourself down here because it won’t take them long to knock these runs off’.

“You play to win and it’s not my idea of an afternoon’s fun to turn up at 12.30, get turned over for 46 within an hour and then watch the opposition knock them off in around five overs.

“Then you have to run around to get the tea sorted so that they have something to eat before they go home.”

Commenting on the team’s display, Browne added: “There is no pussy footing around it, we were shocking and it was an embarrassment.

“I am the world’s worst loser. I came off the pitch on Saturday and fired a few words at my team-mates.

“That wasn’t anything in terms of being horrible to them, it was just in terms of frustration at the fact that we were embarrassed.

“I basically watched all these wickets go down while I was stood at the other end thinking ‘surely we have enough about ourselves and enough pride that, even if we get skittled for 80 or 90, we can bat some overs out’.

“When you are skittled out for 46 that is it, the game is done and dusted.”

Weymouth have an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on Friday evening to discuss the club’s future and Browne is hopeful that something can be done to address their lowly position.

He claimed: “We have got to press on those who are prepared to commit themselves to the club for the rest of the season and beyond for us to put some kind of strategy and plan about where Weymouth Cricket Club goes from here.

“I think, in all honesty, our side at the moment would struggle to compete in Division Two or Three where our second team are playing.

“We have got to now start thinking about the future and picking lads who are going to be there week in and week out. If that means they are not quite ready for Premier League cricket then we need to make a decision as a club.

“We want to have a team that’s playing at the right level to encourage the youngsters we have coming through.”

Browne, who was also named manager of Dorchester Town Reserves boss earlier this summer, did however take the time to praise current Seasiders’ skipper Kieron Womble. “It’s not a great atmosphere in the dressing room and Kieron has had a really tough job,” he said.

“I feel for him because he is probably getting it in the neck from work colleagues and people he knows, and it isn’t down to him.

“He has worked his socks off and deserves a lot of credit for how he has stuck at it.”
