STEVE Coward believes Chickerell United’s decision to set up a third team in favour of an under-18 side can only be good for the club.

The Chickens’ new side is going to be managed by Steve Weldon and will play in Dorset League Division Five next season.

Pre-season training for Chickerell’s three senior sides begins on Thursday, July 9 at Budmouth School (6.30pm) and anyone interested in trying out is welcome.

“In the last few years, only under-18s could play for the under-18s and if the commitment wasn’t there you couldn’t put a younger player or reserve-team player in,” said first-team boss Coward.

“With the new team it means we can develop youngsters in men’s football but also have some experienced lads in there to help them.

“Last season we brought a few of the under-18s into the senior squad and they loved it, so if we can give a few more a taste of men’s football then that can only benefit them and the club.”

He added: “We’ve got seven or eight of the under-18s who are keen to play in the third team next season but we still need experienced players to play with them.

“Pre-season training is open to anyone who fancies having a go, all they need to do is come down and we’ll have a look at them.”

Coward’s men and the reserves will go again in the Dorset Senior League and Dorset League Division One respectively next term.
