AGGRAVATED Jason Matthews has admitted that his charges’ lack of pre-season minutes is “not ideal” but insists his troops have to kick on regardless.

With Hamworthy United having to pull out of last night’s scheduled friendly after being unable to raise a side, Weymouth, who did all they could in a last-gasp bid to find a replacement fixture, have been immensely unlucky in their warm-up to the new season.

With their clash against Portland United fogged off after just more than an hour and their trip to Taunton Town washed out, Matthews’ men will go into tomorrow’s clash at Gosport Borough (3pm) having not played 90 minutes for three weeks.

The Terras’ boss told Echosport: “I was massively disappointed about last night. I feel a little bit let down by Hamworthy to be honest.

“They said they had injuries but if they could have let us know before 3pm on Wednesday it would have been greatly appreciated.

“We probably tried 30 or 40 clubs on Wednesday night to get a friendly, it was just not possible.

“But we have to kick on. It has left us a little bit short of pre-season games on the whole but we will not be using it as an excuse and we will go into tomorrow’s game positively.

“We haven’t really played a full 90 minutes for about three weeks now. We need to get this game in and Gosport have been doing well in pre-season, it will be a good test to see where we are at.”

Instead of the Hammers clash, Weymouth were due to train instead — Matthews also insisted he would not be looking for a midweek friendly next week.

Looking at their encounter at Privett Park former Plymouth Argyle striker Josh Grant is still set to feature as a trialist.

Jordan Copp is expected to be fit once again and Mark Molesley is also hopeful of playing a part.

Matthews added: “Mark has made good progress but he wouldn’t have been ready for last night anyway. He is not far away and hopefully he will play some part at Gosport.”
