WEYMOUTH College sports student Becky Raybould showed her sprinting pedigree to become the new national junior women’s points race champion.

Raybould proved too strong for the opposition as she won three of the eight sprints to take gold ahead of Matrix Fitness Development’s Lucy Shaw and Team Velosport’s Abigail Dentus.

Poole Wheelers rider Raybould produced a gutsy ride after breaking away halfway through the race with Lucy Shaw and then holding on to gain the most points in the sprint laps.

Competing in the endurance events at British Cycling National Youth and Junior Track Championships in Manchester, she also took bronze in the 40-lap scratch race.

Leading front again, Raybould was caught by Shaw and Eleanor Dickinson from Team Giordana Triton in the final stages – she narrowly missed out on a second bronze in the 2km pursuit.

Meanwhile, Alex Jolliffe, a student at Budmouth College, started the week with a fourth place in the 1km time trial and then went one better in the keirin and match sprint events, winning bronze medals in both.

In the sprint, Jolliffe, of Team Terminator, was beaten in the semi-finals by the eventual champion Joe Truman from Petersfield.

That meant Jolliffe faced a ride-off against Manchester’s Tom Rotherham, with the former clinching two straight wins to secure third place.

Both young riders were very pleased with their performances but know they can’t rest on theirlaurels with the Senior National Championships taking place in September.

Before that, this weekend will see Raybould racing in the Revolution Series at the new Derby Velodrome alongside the likes of Olympic champions Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell, Jason Kenny and Bradley Wiggins.
