HOLT UNITED 0 WEYMOUTH RESERVES 2

DESPITE his side’s victory over Holt United at Gaunts Common on Saturday, Weymouth Reserves manager Bradley Asagba labelled the contest as “dross”.

Nevertheless, the Terras boss was pleased with another positive result and to go unbeaten throughout his first competitive month in the job.

Missing a number of key players from their ranks, Weymouth’s first goal came around 20 minutes into proceedings when James Bergin finished off one of the game’s better moves after he was played through.

And following the interval, the Terras soon got their second to put them well in control.

Lloyd Beals showed smart awareness to charge down a clearance from the Holt goalkeeper, and after ricocheting off him the ball fell into the net.

Following the win, Asagba told Echosport: “It was a game that was pretty much low on quality.

“We were considerably under strength and it was about getting a result.

“We came through it quite well. We didn’t play very well but that wasn’t necessarily the most important part.

“Holt away has always been a tricky proposition and, if you had offered me 2-0 before the start of the game, I would have snapped your hand off given the unavailability we had.

“Honestly speaking, in terms of our performance, if I was to rate it out of 10 I would probably say it was a four for the first half. We were really bad.

“Afterwards, I said to the Holt manager, who I know quite well, that it really and truly was dross and I felt sorry for anybody who had to watch it!”

But with another three points in the bag, Asagba’s men sit well placed in fourth spot after their opening six outings.

They are only a point off the league’s leading trio of Shaftesbury Town, Balti Sports and Merley Cobham Sports. “To remain unbeaten for the month is quite pleasing,” the Terras chief added.

“Other people may disagree but I think we have had a difficult start in terms of fixtures and we have come through them.

“I think we will get better as the season goes along and the key to that is the squad staying together.

“We have got a good pool of players and I’d always like to think that we could maybe add to it if possible.

“Saturday has proven, if not by performance, the depth of the squad and certainly the character and the resilience.”
