ISLAND manager Gary Bailey is hoping Portland United captain Lewis Whyton’s knee injury is “nothing too serious”.

Club stalwart Whyton was forced to limp off after 65 minutes during the Blues’ 2-1 victory at Totton & Eling on Saturday, after a tough challenge had enhanced the problem, which he had been suffering with for a little while.

Bailey told Echosport: “Lewis has been carrying a little knock on his knee.

“He has trained and played through it and it hasn’t caused him too much problems during games.

“But he went into a challenge and landed heavily on it and couldn’t carry on.”

Bailey, whose side currently top Sydenhams Wessex One with eight league wins out of nine, added: “We are a little bit concerned about it, he is going to have it looked at.

“We have two Saturdays without a game before we (competitively) play again now.

“Maybe this break has come at a good time for Lewis, he can rest it up and he won’t be involved in any training or friendlies, certainly in the early part of this break.

“It gives us the chance to assess it and we will see where he is in a couple of weeks.

“He doesn’t miss many and he is a quick healer, hopefully there is nothing too serious in there.”
