PORTLAND UNITED 6 NEW MILTON TOWN 0
PORTLAND United’s remarkable run in Sydenhams Wessex League Division One continues to gather pace as they strolled past New Milton Town at Grove Corner.
Treating another strong gate of 121 to six goals without reply, the emphatic victory saw the Blues record their 12th win from 13 league fixtures – their only defeat so far came at Romsey Town way back in August.
Commenting on Saturday’s performance, Blues’ chief Gary Bailey told Echosport: “We played some really good football. It was a really solid home performance.
“It was a patient display, we kept our shape really well, and scored at good times.
“I am delighted with the clean sheet, pleased to get six goals, and it was well earned.”
Ed Bastick opened the scoring for the dominant Blues after just eight minutes when he applied an accomplished finish having been set free.
In breezy conditions, Carl McClements then made it two 10 minutes before the break with a controlled lofted finish after running onto a ball from Ross Carmichael, giving the Blues a two-goal lead at the break.
Portland’s third was then added soon after the interval when a surging run and cross from Ashley Smith found Ross Doidge at the back post and he tucked home to put the contest to bed.
From then on it was party time for the Blues and a late flurry saw them boost their impressive goal difference even further.
Former Dorchester Town man Alex Godfrey was rewarded for some hard work throughout when he beat the Linnets’ keeper to a ball from deep to score and, in the latter stages, substitute Alex Halloran recorded a double.
He pounced for his first of the afternoon, nodding home after Carmichael’s initial header had cannoned off the bar, and then hit a strike on the turn from 20 yards late on to ensure the Blues racked up six goals in total.
