WEYMOUTH captain Kieron Womble feels his side are the underdogs as they visit Bere Regis tomorrow (1.30pm) for their first league encounter of the season.

The seaside club won just two games last year but their captain feels the side have improved over the winter.

Womble said: “We have a strong team so we will go there feeling positive that we can challenge and get a result which we haven’t done for a while.

“I don’t see us as favourites. Bere Regis are a good side and we struggled last year.”

Womble struck a century in Weymouth’s friendly loss to Portland Red Triangle last weekend and he wants others to provide some assistance.

“Hopefully I can get some runs but if I don’t then someone else will have to,” he added.

“We have Dean Janaway and Neil Walton as well as a few other solid players who can step up and I’m confident someone will.”

With a new season on the horizon, Womble is hoping some of his players can stand up and perform well for the side.

He explained: “We have a young off-spinner called Harry Mitchell who on his day can pick up a handful of wickets, which is what we need.

“On the batting side we hope Dean can play well.

“He’s a quality player and we hope he can be a match-winner.”
