IT IS party time at Grove Corner tomorrow as Portland United are set to be presented with their trophy for winning the Sydenhams Wessex Division One crown.

Following the Blues’ league fixture against Totton & Eling (3pm), Gary Bailey’s champions, who have stormed to the title by only losing three league games in the process, will get their reward for such an impressive campaign.

And the island manager, whose charges are only five short of racking up 100 league goals for the season, is looking to put on a show in front of what he hopes will be a bumper crowd.

“To me, it’s a really important game,” he told Echosport.

“It’s our last home game and our support has been fantastic this year. The boys were saying in the dressing room afterwards on Wednesday ‘come on, let’s get ourselves back up for Saturday’.

“They owe it to the supporters to put a good performance in and it’s always great to sign off at home with a win. That’s what we will try to do and there certainly won’t be any hangover from that defeat (against Amesbury).

“It was great to win it (the league) last week and get over the line but it was a little bit muted because we were celebrating away from home and there was only a small band of people there.

“I think it will sink in once we pick the trophy up and have a celebration in front of our own supporters.”

He added: “Everyone is looking forward to it.

“Our president Dave Camp is having a real campaign, his dream has been to get 200 in for a league match this season. We want to try and get as many people as we can there to celebrate our league win.

“With Weymouth and Dorchester having finished, we are hoping for a bumper turnout and, to be fair, the players and the club deserve that because they have put a lot of hard work in this season.

“It would be terrific to see a really good crowd there to witness us getting the trophy and signing off the season at home.”
