WEYMOUTH’S Amber Davies helped her Wessex LeAF side to the Under-18 Grand Prix title at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering.

Wessex claimed a straight sets win over Graveney Malory Eagles to life the title. This comes just a month after Davies’ team won the Under-18 Cup final.

Davies’ future plans are to compete on the Volleyball England Beach Tour again this summer, before before moving to join Sheffield Volleyball Club next season, whilst she is studying at Sheffield University.

She has, in the last year, made six appearances for England Under-19s and representing England again in the NEVZA competition in October 2016 is another motivation.

Despite the comfortable scoreline, it was Malory Eagles who started the brighter at Kettering.

They took the first point of the day, kicking off the first game with an impressive serve.

Wessex claimed the next two but their early lead didn’t last long as Malory levelled up.

The first technical time-out brought a healthy lead of 8-5 to Wessex. Malory Eagles started to sneak up on Wessex, getting back to 9-8 during the first minutes of play after the technical time-out.

Despite an impressive dive from Valeriya Minaeva, Wessex took the point, bumping the score up to 13-11. The second technical time-out saw a four-point advantage to Wessex.

The Eagles brought the game back to 19-19 as the tension rose. Wessex called a time-out as their opponents took the lead for the first time and it had the desired effect as Davies’ side went on to win the set 25-23.

Wessex took an early lead in the second set, opening up a 5-1 lead. Malory Eagles fought back and closed the daunting gap as they gained three points.

At the first technical time-out, the score was a close 8-6 to Wessex LeAF with their opponents hot on their heels.

It was all square at 11-all but the gap between the two started to expand as Wessex led at the second technical time-out with a score of 16-11 and the second set trend continued as Wessex won it comfortably by 25 points to 17.

The Eagles took an early lead in the third set but Wessex started to close the gap as they fought back and levelled the score. After that brief scare, they pulled away to 11-6 and still held a healthy six-point cushion by the second technical time out.

Malory Eagles, knowing their hopes of winning were pinned on this passage of play, fought back reducing the arrears and even levelled the set up at 23-23.

But Davies’ Wessex side held their nerve to win the next two points and claim the third set and the match 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-23).
