BRIDPORT Rugby Club held its annual dinner and awards presentation in the clubhouse with guest speaker England and British Lions star Dean Richards.

More than 70 players, members and vice-presidents enjoyed a pleasant evening with an excellent meal and an entertaining speech by the former England man.

Playing in the era that he did, Richards reflected on how much the game had changed since his playing days.

He related some amusing and colourful tales of his former team-mates and matches for England and the Lions and then fielded questions on a variety of subjects from the hardest player he had played against, Wayne Shelford, to the current state of the England team and their prospects for the next World Cup.

The evening concluded with the presentation of the player awards.

Club captain Tom Gamwell was voted clubman of the year by members of the committee. Ricky Stubbs was awarded players’ player of the year and Steve Davies was given the accolade of young player of the year.

Davies also picked up the club’s ‘muppet of the year’ trophy for some of his actions during the season!

The club will be holding their AGM on Friday, May 27, commencing in the clubhouse from 7pm.
