CALVIN Brooks admits club captaincy at Weymouth is “definitely something he is interested in” next season but is not going to let it affect him if the armband does not permanently come his way.

The former Yeovil and Dorchester Town defender got a taste of skippering the side on the field at the back end of last season and admitted when signing his new deal that it was something that played on his mind.

Asked if he had spoken to boss Jason Matthews about taking over full club captaincy with the Terras, Brooks told Echosport: “This has been one of the things I have probably spoken about the most.

“A lot of it has been with my parents and brother. They have said to me ‘you want to make sure you are captain’.

“If he (Matthews) spoke to me and said ‘I want you to be captain next year’ obviously I’d be delighted but if he says it’s too early for me to be club captain then I would completely understand.

“There will be a lot of people in that dressing room who will have a lot more experience than I do and would probably be able to demand a little more respect from certain people than me.

“But don’t get me wrong, I don’t feel like I couldn’t do a good job. The way I would do it would probably do it a different way. I feel I am better at leading by example on the pitch and some others might be better leading off it.

“It’s definitely something I am interested in. I am not going to go to Jase and say that I demand it though, because I feel in a privileged position.

“I will be happy with whatever I am told, to be honest. I am not going to throw my toys out the pram because he says he wants someone else to be captain.

“The most important thing is that we win games consistently, whoever is captain.”

Current club skipper Stewart Yetton endured an indifferent campaign last term, but Brooks has also spoken out to highlight the qualities of the former Truro City man.

He added: “You don’t have a lot of people in non-League football like Yetts, his commitment is second to none. He travels the furthest, is one of the earliest ones there and one of the last ones out.

“A lot of people don’t see what he does off the field and how big a character he is. Without him, we would have been a lot worse off and people do not see that.

“He gets everyone going through training and his standards are unbelievable. I know he has had a bit of stick for being a bit overweight but last year in pre-season he smashed the beach run.

“I am sure if he carries on he will find his form again.”
