JASON Matthews has struck a double deal to retain the services of Terras’ Billy Lowes and Ashley Wells for next season.

Former Poole Town midfielder Lowes was highly impressive during his first term with the club last year and full-back Wells put in another consistent campaign as part of a solid backline, having fought to earn his place in Matthews' starting XI.

Revealing the deals to Echosport, Weymouth boss Matthews said: “They are both really good players and we have got a good young squad.

“People probably don’t realise it but if that group stay together for a number of years, who knows where it can go?

“I am starting to get a close-knit bunch of lads as well and, in this day in age in football, it’s a rarity.”

He added: “Billy has signed a one year contract. We rewarded him with the contract because he did so well last year.

“For a young lad of 18 to come in and make 30-odd appearances is an outstanding achievement. We are delighted to have him on board.

“I am sure that he had a few options so to get him tied down is really nice and he will play a big part next year. I am looking forward to kicking on now.

“Ash had some good competition for his place last year and spent a little bit of time on the sidelines to start with.

“But, again, he came through that and was outstanding for the second half of the season."

Matthews also claimed he was close to retaining more of his current squad with “one or two” possibly agreeing fresh terms this week.

New recruits are also being targeted by the Weymouth player-boss.

He added: “With the right additions I am sure we can go one better next season.”
