THERE were birthday celebrations at the Andrew Simpson Sailing Centre (ASSC) to mark its second anniversary.

The centre invited people from the local community to join in activities such as free sailing tasters, fossil hunting and stone carving.

The event was very popular with more than 300 people, aged over the age of five, taking to the water for a sailing taster in light winds and sunshine.

Families and friends, many of whom were completely new to the sport, enjoyed sailing together with lots of smiles as they returned to shore.

The famous cardboard boat race had entries from 20 boats with sailing manufacturer, RS Sailing and Andrew’s eldest son, Freddie Simpson and nephew Isaac Tyler, claiming first prize.

The race was a highlight of the day with many people already planning how to make their boats that little bit faster for next year.

Local businesses the YHA, Portland Bill Lighthouse, Portland Sculpture and Quarry Trust also attended the event and provided educational and fun activities on the shore.

Alex Porter, centre manager at the ASSC said: “It was fantastic to see so many people at the centre on Saturday.

“Once again we had perfect sailing conditions and it was great that so many people were able to experience the enjoyment sailing can bring.

“The cardboard boat race was a huge success and we will definitely make this an annual event.

“We hope to see more people at the centre during the summer and at our Bart’s Bash event which will take place on September 17-18.”
