JASON Matthews admitted he was “absolutely buzzing” to get Terras’ striker Ben Thomson to re-sign for the club next season.

The Terras’ boss revealed to Echosport that the former Frome Town man, who he initially described as “the best striker in the league” back in March, has agreed a deal to remain at the Bob Lucas Stadium for 2016/17.

Thomson made the switch from Frome to Weymouth in August 2015 and, after finding his feet in the side, became the spearhead of Matthews’ attack, picking up the club’s golden boot award.

And, similarly to other members of his squad from last season, the player-manager was delighted to thwart competition from elsewhere and keep the sharpshooter on the Weymouth books.

Speaking about the deal, Matthews told Echosport: “I am absolutely buzzing.

“Ben is another player that has had quite a few options this summer and, if he stays injury free, I feel he will be one of the most feared marksmen in the league.

“For me, he was probably the find of last season and I am really pleased that he has chosen to re-sign for us.

“He brings a lot to the table, not only has he scored goals but his all-round play, when he’s got his head on it, makes him a real handful.

“I never had any doubts that he would be able to do it (at Weymouth).

“He is a bit of a linchpin for what we are trying to do.”

While Thomson was in strong form during the latter stages of the Terras’ last campaign, he was hampered by an ongoing hamstring issue.

But Matthews insisted the club has found a way to rectify the problem.

“Ben himself has probably got a bit more belief and we have got to the bottom of his hamstring injuries,” he claimed. “With a good pre-season under his belt he should be really good.

“He is doing some work on his hamstrings to strengthen himself and to, hopefully, get through an injury-free season. If he can, I feel he will be one of the top scorers.”
