PORTLAND Town held their annual five-a-side tournament at the billiardsboutique.com bowl, where nearly 50 players competed for bragging rights and £100 in cash.

Six teams were entered with between five and eight players each, and it was Tom Skelcher’s team that were crowned champions winning the final 1-0 thanks to a goal from Billy Liveley against Luke Barber’s side.

Ben White and Danny Vaughan’s teams were the first to be eliminated in the group stages as two groups of three saw only the top two in each progress to the knockout stages.

The semi-finals saw Luke Barber’s team beat a Mike O’Donovan side while, in the other semi, Skelcher’s side triumphed over Ben Gilbert’s team in a penalty shoot-out.

New signing to the Saturday sides, Liveley then secured victory for Skelcher’s troops in a thrilling final.

Event organiser Peter Williams said after the tournament: “It was a very good day of football. The lads enjoyed it and I’m pleased everything went to plan. The winners walked away with £100 and the club made a few pounds too.”

The islanders begin pre-season training on Tuesday on the IPACA Fields, Weston Road from 7pm. Old and new players are welcome.
