THE final schools competition of the year saw youngsters compete in the Weymouth & District Schools individual competition.

In the boys’ competition, Jed Brackenridge (St John’s) won the under-11 event and became Primary School champion.

Brackenridge, who made his debut for Weymouth this season in the National Cadet League, won all three games in a final group of four containing George Ackerley (St John’s), Jean Baker (Holy Trinity) and Ted Paul (Beechcroft).

Baker was runner-up beating Paul three games to one (14-12, 11-9, 5-11, 11-9).

The game of the day was between the third and fourth-placed players, Paul winning a close decider to defeat Ackerley 3-2 (6-11, 11-3, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9). Sam Melhuish (Southill) won the under-11 consolation group.

Jules Holloway (Wey Valley) won the boys’ under-13 event with Ben Howe (Budmouth) the runner- up.

Holloway had won the boys’ schools team competition earlier in the year for Wey Valley and his only defeat that day was against Budmouth’s Howe.

This time Holloway gained his revenge and the title in a 3-1 victory (7-11, 11-5, 11-5, 15-13). Ethan Bingham (Wey Valley) came third.

It was an all-Budmouth decider in the under-16 event between Jamie Blair and Ethan Gear. After a very close opening game which Blair edged 12-10, he came out on top with a 3-0 win with subsequent 11-3 and 11-8 game wins.

April Heasman (Wey Valley) won the under-16 girls’ event with Rosa McKechnie (Budmouth) the runner-up.

Both girls were unbeaten leading into their deciding game which Dorset county player, Heasman, won 2-0 (11-5, 11-3).

There were several encouraging displays from an emerging group of Budmouth girls who train together each week at the Budmouth girls after-school club. This group will be looking to do well in the National School team events in the future.

Ella Stanton finished third overall, though games against Jaimee Browne (Budmouth) and Jasmine Abel (Budmouth) went to deciding sets in very close games. Abel managed to secure fourth spot in another deciding set win over Browne.

Jess Moggeridge (IPACA, Royal Manor) defeated Amelia Andrews (Holy Trinity) in the final of the under-11 event. Moggeridge recently competed in the National Championships in Preston and showed her extra experience with a solid display.

The tournament organisers would like to give thanks to trophy sponsors Dot and Heather Dowell for their support.

Youth and adult practice continues over the summer holidays every Monday at the Wey Valley Tennis Centre between 6pm and 8pm.
