CASTLE Cove Sailing Club Cadets shone at the Topper National Championships.

The seven youngsters made the long journey to East Lothian Yacht Club, North Berwick joining more than 220 other sailors.

The week started with high winds resulting in the racing being abandoned on the first two days.

In complete contrast, on the third day, there was little wind. The 5.3 fleet sailors headed on to the water only to sit around for six hours.

Eventually the racing was abandoned but whilst on the water, the fleet enjoyed rafting up, swimming and even spotting puffins and seals.

The 4.2 fleet stuck close to the shore and were able to complete four races.

On day four, the sailors launched only to return to the shore shortly afterwards.

After yet another launch, four qualifying races took place with the 5.3 fleet returning at dusk, again spending six hours on the water.

High winds returned on day five with gusts of more than 30 knots.

The 5.3 Gold and Silver fleets were able to complete two races in the challenging conditions.

On the last day, the wind strength was too high and racing was abandoned by 11am. Unfortunately not enough races were sailed to crown a national champion for 2016.

In the 5.3 fleet which had more than 170 sailors, Will Adler scored highly, finishing in 20th place in the Gold fleet.

Ben McElroy was placed 52nd and Ollie Fellows finished 60th in the Gold fleet.

In the Silver fleet, Ben Richardson gave a credible performance in the tricky conditions achieving 45th position.

The 4.2 sailors finished the event in consecutive places on the results. Ben Adler scored 32nd, Tia Adler took 33rd and 34th place went to George Fellows.

The Castle Cove sailors all agreed, East Lothian Yacht Club held a fantastic event with great sponsorship and something for everyone.
