YEOVIL 49

WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 17

AFTER a winning start to their season, Weymouth & Portland were brought back down to earth with a bump after Yeovil handed them a 49-17 defeat.

Joel Wilson may have scored the opening try of the game for the visitors, but the hosts took control after that, racking up try after try.

The Seaside club performed valiantly throughout and second-half tries from Will Quick and Ryan Lewendon showed their fighting spirit.

After the game, first-team manager Vaughan Carter said: “The result is no way a fair reflection of the game, we just made too many mistakes mostly when we had possession of the ball when we squandered numerous scoring opportunities.

“At some stages we looked like we had never played together before, Yeovil were more street-wise than us, but that is about all, we matched then up front and in my opinion are a stronger outfit than at this time last season, we just have to work hard in training and eradicate silly mistakes from our game then we should be okay.”

Despite the hefty scoreline, it started well for the visitors. After a battling first few minutes, Wilson opened his side’s account for the day to give Weymouth a 5-0 lead. However, Lewendon was unsuccessful with the conversion.

Yeovil were quick to respond as they scored their first try of the game minutes later. Unlike Lewendon, they were able to convert their score, giving them a 12-5 lead.

Soon after, the home side added seven more points to the score, again with a converted try.

After some stern words from Carter at the break, Weymouth came out with momentum in the second half.

Will Quick found some space to score the seaside club’s second try and this time Lewendon was able to kick the extra two points.

But, this only spurred Yeovil on. They scored 30 unanswered points to put the game beyond doubt. A late Lewendon try was some consolation to the away side, who were now down to 14 men thanks to injuries, but they were unable to mount any sort of comeback.

Carter added: “The wheels fell off through injury when one of our players was injured so we had to change the system.

“They were the better side but I felt Aiden Walker, Chris Lewendon and Ian Dixon showed some great heart and determination.”

Up next for Weymouth & Portland is a home game at Monmouth Avenue against Bournemouth Thirds, who top the table after two wins from two games.
