PORTLAND United chairman Robin Satherley is hoping his side can provide some fireworks this weekend as they get set for their first FA Vase tie in 10 years.

The Blues welcome Almondsbury UWE to Grove Corner on Saturday and after an impressive start to the season – including a 1-0 win over Andover Town last time out – the chairman hopes to see a few new faces for their tie.

He told Echosport: “I am hoping our loyal supporters will turn out in force, just as they did recently against Blackfield and Langley where a crowd of 208 saw an excellent game.

“It would be great if we could exceed the 200-mark again.

“The opportunity provides the club with the chance to hopefully progress further in the competition and at the same time boost the finances by winning the lion’s share of the £800 prize money on offer.”

Satherley has helped lead the club to back-to-back promotions and has enjoyed their step into the Wessex Premier Division.

He added: “We currently sit fourth in the league, testament to the hard work by manager Gary Bailey, assistant Mark Carter and the players.

“The days of winning week in, week out, while in the DPL and more recently the Wessex Division One have long gone. However, our supporters tell me they are very pleased with our progress.”
