WEYMOUTH 6

SOTON TROJANS II 2

WEYMOUTH stormed to the top of the league after beating Southampton at Redlands.

Keen to maintain momentum, the home side started well with high pressure and quick attacking play, this paid dividends when in-form forward Patrick May scored with great work along the baseline and a little luck from the defence.

This however, had a negative effect on the Seasiders who seemed to take their foot off the accelerator and allowed Trojans back into the game.

Poor defensive play allowed them to not only equalise but also take the lead.

Had it not been for the efforts of defenders Simon Harvey and Mike Westlake and goalkeeper David Civil, it could have been worse.

The Seasiders were clearly rattled and were thankful when the half-time whistle blew.

Weymouth started the second half in the same fashion they started the first with great pressing and lots of energy.

Their efforts were rewarded when they won a penalty cor- ner.

May stepped up and dragged low to the keeper’s right, leaving him with no chance.

The home side were level and it didn’t take long for them to take the lead.

The goal coming once again from May, another trademark drag flick whistling past the keeper.

Once the Seasiders had their noses in front they settled into the game and began to dominate from the front with great work from forwards Teddy Ruxpin and Aaron Wilkinson.

The midfield of captain Steven Membury and Matt Underhill were solid and dealt with any rare attacks from the visitors comfortably.

Weymouth were in the ascendancy and extended their lead with two quickfire goals from Underhill.

The first was a special one. The midfield maestro danced his way into the circle and lifted the ball over the on-rushing keeper.

The second came in the shape of a penalty corner.

This time, Underhill pounced on uncertainty from the away side’s defence to lash the ball in from close range.

There was still time for May to complete the scoring when debutant Luke Drewitt showed great skill and awareness to find May unmarked in the circle, who slapped the ball high into the corner.

The victory saw Weymouth take the top spot in the league and gives them a great base in which to mount a serious title charge.

The next game will be a tricky one away to relegated Haslemere where Weymouth will be looking to make it four wins from four.
