WEYMOUTH 3

BOURNEMOUTH SECONDS 1

WEYMOUTH lifted themselves off the bottom of the league with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth Seconds.

Strikes from Niamh Houghton, Emily Austin and Amanda Sullivan secured a well-deserved win at Redlands.

Determination was high in the Seasiders’ ranks as they looked to gain some momentum in the league.

An early goal from Bournemouth, dampened Weymouth’s spirits but, not for long.

Houghton drew the scores level as a result of some brilliant advantage called by the umpire, following up a deflection from Austin’s cracking reverse stick strike.

Back in good spirits, Weymouth became fired up and carried on protecting their half.

Houghton’s equaliser had the home team pumped, and skipper Wendy Butcher’s defining cross to Austin found the back of the net again.

Bournemouth started to feel the heat and they started to fight back but, it was not enough to make Weymouth’s defence quiver.

The awesome line-up of Jo Brazier, Jacqui Ridler, Sophie Russell and Gina Brown, rallied by awesome temporary keeper Alice Craven, proved too strong for Bournemouth’s attack.

Amanda Sullivan was able to hammer the final nail in the visitors’ coffin, following a textbook cross from Austin, who earned a well-deserved player of the match title.

Injured keeper Megan Eadon-Turner was forced to watch the match from the sidelines and said of her team: “It was like Christmas had come early for the home team with the final score of 3-1. I am so proud of them.”

Captain Wendy Butcher had nothing but positives to shower on her team. She said: “We really pulled together this week, and Hallelujah, we’re no longer bottom of the table.”

Weymouth’s next fixture is on Saturday against Bath Buccaneers at Redlands with a noon pushback.
