WEYMOUTH Amateur Boxing Club held their dinner show at the Weymouth Pavilion with 180 people sitting down for dinner and watching 15 boxing bouts.

From the home boxers, Kane Benson, 12, having his first bout for the Weymouth club, came out firing on all cylinders in his skills contest against Luke Booth.

The third round was the best round for Benson and he was enjoying showing off his boxing skills and catching Booth with solid shots by the end of the round.

But it was Booth who ran out a worthy points winner.

Weymouth’s Oliver Carr boxed on the back foot against Mason Buckland in their junior bout.

The second round was the same with Buckland going forward and Carr using his boxing skills, catching Buckland with solid combinations but, it was not enough to win the round.

The third round was the best for Carr as he started to get his boxing skills together and put pressure on Buckland, forcing him back on the ropes. When the final bell went, Buckland ran out the points winner.

There was a return bout between Weymouth’s Conor Merson and Jack Holmes with Holmes winning on the first occasion.

After a slow start, Merson was caught with solid shots from Holmes, the second round was better for Merson as he forced Holmes to retreat with solid combinations to the head.

Both boxers stepped up their game in the final round with spectators surprised that Holmes won on a split points decision.

There was also another return fight as the Grey Ranks’ Libys McGuinness took on Exeter’s Catherine Hoist.

McGuinness was a clear points winner in Exeter when the two first met and she came out straight from the first bell on the attack this time round with solid combinations to the head and body to win the first round.

The home boxer kept the pressure up throughout the second round to stay in control and after an attacking third round, McGuinness clearly won on points.

Chloe Le-Page then stepped into the ring competitively for the first time in two years against Bobbie Clarke of Leigh Park.

Clarke was doing all the pressing from the first bell and won the first round. In the second round Le-Page boxed better behind and threw combinations to catch Clarke but then away fighter came back with her own power punches and stole the round.

Le-Page was waiting too long to get her shots off in round three but when she did open up she looked a far better boxer. Clarke finished the stronger and won on points.

Also representing the Grey Ranks on the night was Lukasz Kucharski in action against Matthew Lewis from Trowbridge.

Both boxers came into the bout unbeaten and the first round started with Lewis throwing long shots and Kucharski trying to keep close to get off his power shots, which he did with great success.

In round two, it became a very close encounter with both fighters landing shots, Lewis with his combinations and Lukas with his head and body shots that were getting through.

It was all on the last round with both boxers coming out to win the contest and they did not disappoint the crowd. Both boxers finished toe-to-toe and it was Lewis who emerged with a split points win.

Speaking on behalf of the club, Weymouth ABC president David Nelmes said: “Many thanks must go to Phil Say and the staff of the Weymouth Pavilion for all the help they give to the Weymouth Boxing Club at these shows. Also to Loose Moose catering, Dorset Embroidery and Printwear for the boxing trophies and all our sponsors on the night, without them there would be no show.”
