YATELEY 5

WEYMOUTH 3

WEYMOUTH’S push for promotion took a dent as they lost to a well-drilled Yateley side.

The hosts started as the better side pressing high and putting the Seasiders under a huge amount of pressure but it was the visitors who took the lead.

After a few clean passes from the defenders, left-back Michael Westlake found forward Pat May down the line who then carved the defence apart with a superb through ball in to Luke Drewitt’s path who slotted the ball home.

Yateley increased the pressure, which eventually paid off as they scored an equaliser from a short corner.

Weymouth quickly replied after a tidy bit of play saw Simon Harvey win a short corner after being fouled in the D.

The Seasiders converted this chance when May passed to Harvey waiting at the near post.

Teddy Andrews received a yellow card for a bad stick tackle resulting in a short corner in which Yateley converted.

Weymouth were then soon down to nine men as Westlake was harshly sent to the sin-bin after talking back to the umpire.

Weymouth soaked up all the pressure and managed not to concede any goals during this period.

Weymouth, back to 11 men, were caught on the break resulting in another Yateley goal to make it 3-2 at half-time.

The second half started with Weymouth still in with a chance of some points.

This belief resulted in a great individual goal from Drewitt, who received a pass on the halfway line, went on a menacing run beating several players and placed the ball on to an opponent’s foot just outside the D.

The umpire played advantage and the forward then continued running into the D and along the baseline where he converted from a tight angle for a first-class goal.

Weymouth had a few opportunities to take the lead – one came to Andrews who struck a post. In hindsight, the forward should have passed it to Aaron Wilkinson who was waiting on the back post. Drewitt almost linked up well with Harvey but Harvey’s diving deflection narrowly missed the bottom left corner.

Yateley had a few chances of their own, one looked like a guaranteed goal if it wasn’t for Harvey’s outstanding goal-line save.

Yateley continued to press, which eventually paid off as they scored from another well-worked short corner.

Weymouth pushing for a late equaliser were caught on the counter and conceded another goal which finished the game off for the hosts with a 5-3 win.

n Weymouth face Southampton University this Saturday aiming to finish 2016 with a win.
