BOURNEMOUTH 51

DORCHESTER ladies excelled in their latest Vivienne Trophy fixture, and in achieving a comprehensive win over a strong Bournemouth side kept on course for a back-to-back success in this national tournament.

At Bournemouth, as in previous games, the two county town away triples set out their stall, with a plan to keep the home advantage to a minimum and allow the their own home triples to rack up an overall superiority of shots.

Having secured a top rink result at home in the previous round Pauline Bate, Linda Hill and skip Margaret Cullip reverted to their travelling role of last season, quickly adapting to the slower pace of the away indoor green.

After five ends of play, with the score against the Bournemouth’s triple of Ezme Hazel tied at five shots apiece, Cullip stepped up a gear and forged ahead 17-10 thanks to an outstanding contribution from lead Pauline Bates.

A Bournemouth response came too late to save the day as Cullip took the spoils 17-14.

The companion away Dorchester triple of Chris Jones, Hillary Wilson and skip Kay Johns tackled a Bournemouth three headed by Pauline West and experienced a tricky start.

They fell 5-0 behind, before showing their resolve, wiping out the deficit and established a commanding 12-5 lead.

Unfortunately the banked shots were all lost in one dramatic end, when seven shots were credited to Bournemouth.

Two ends from the finish, Bournemouth led 20-16, but winning singles to Johns reduced the loss to just two shots at 20-18.

It was job done away with a slender advantage of one shot, and as hoped for, the Dorchester home rinks had yet another field day.

Jan Meyers, Sue Lofthouse and Jenny Trotman, who slipped up against Dolphin Poole in the last round, relished their return to the home venue and effortlessly slipped into the role of anchor rink.

The Bournemouth trio skipped by Barbara Lunnan was not allowed to settle as Trotman and co raced to a 15-4 lead by the halfway stage.

This score was doubled before the finish and the demoralised Bournemouth players were only able to add two more shots to their meagre tally.

The 30-6 result achieved by Jenny Trotman was ably backed up by this year’s new Dorchester trio of Elaine Anthony, Gwen Caundle and skip Eve Peavoy.

They repeated their supporting role victory of the first round, keeping comfortably ahead of Lynda Gorf and her Bournemouth team-mates, going 12-5 up at eight ends, and went on to maintain their 100 per cent record with a final tally of 21 shots to 11, before Bournemouth conceded the match with one end remaining.

Round three will be played early in the New Year with a pairing against the East Dorset Indoor Bowls Club (Christchurch).
