WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 22

YEOVIL 65

WEYMOUTH & Portland had no answer as flawless Yeovil maintained their perfect points record in Dorset & Wilts One South, with a comprehensive win at Monmouth Avenue.

Yeovil, who were promoted along with the Seasiders from Dorset & Wilts Two South last term, showed their class as the frontrunners at the level above this season.

They led the hosts led by 30-10 at half-time and eventually ran in a whopping nine tries, seven conversions and two penalties.

The Seasiders replied with two tries from Dan Hayne and another from Dan Bowditch. Bryn Llewellyn slotted two penalties and two conversions.

The defeat leaves Vaughan Carter’s side sixth in the league table, with 31 points from 12 league outings so far.

Reflecting on Saturday’s reverse, manager Carter said: “A defeat against the unbeaten runaway league leaders maybe, but it was a defeat with honour.

“I stated last week that we were struggling to name a starting XV and I had to ask some lads to play well outside their comfort zone in positions that they not played competitively before. To their credit none of them whinged to me at all.

“It was understandable that it took time for the team to settle and, by the time they did, we were well behind.

“However, we came good in the last half hour and finished the stronger side but by then the result was well beyond us.”

He added: “Yeovil have the best set of three-quarters that we have played against all season, but in the set scrum we definitely had a big advantage and would be happy to scrummage against them for all 80 minutes.

“Our prop, Tim Comben, had a magnificent game both in set and loose play, but the game is about more than scrummaging unfortunately for us.”

Yeovil now have a maximum 60 points from their 12 league games.
