WEYMOUTH 5

UNIVERSITY OF PORTSMOUTH 4

WEYMOUTH managed to get their turbulent season back on track by defeating the University of Portsmouth 5-4.

Things didn’t get off to the best of starts when the students went ahead early on after converting a penalty corner low into the bottom corner.

The goal seemed to spark the home side into life as they were level shortly after when Matt Metcalfe expertly controlled a long pass from right back Simon Harvey who found an unmarked Steven Membury in the attacking circle who fired home.

Weymouth then began to dictate the play thanks to the midfield trio of Matt Underhill, Teddy Ruxpin and Michael Westlake.

The Seasiders lead was doubled just before half-time, this time with Membury turning provider as he beat three players on his way to the baseline before picking out Metcalfe who rifled his effort past the keeper with seconds to spare.

After the break, Weymouth picked up where they left off as pressure from forward Aaron Wilkinson led to the winning of a short corner, which was converted by defender Simon Harvey to make it 3-1.

Captain Membury managed to get his second of the game when a great reverse pass from Underhill was deflected home, before the visitors started to mount a comeback.

Shortly after, the hosts found themselves two players down as Dave Beaudro and then Harvey were sent to the sinbin, leading to a quick fire double from the students who made their advantage count.

This was followed by another for the visitors who scored an equaliser when an effort took a great deflection in off the post to make it 4-4.

But there was to be one more twist in the tale, when a great ball forward by Harvey was pounced upon by Ruxpin who carried the ball and showed great maturity to find Metcalfe at the back post to score the winner with a minute to spare.

Looking to keep their momentum going Weymouth travel to Havant this weekend.
