WEYMOUTH RES 6

WEYMOUTH Reserves made extremely light work of Folland Sports to cruise to a 6-1 victory at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday.

With the Sydenhams Wessex League Division One clash following the first team’s 2-2 draw with Hayes & Yeading United, first-team boss Jason Matthews took a watching brief in the first half and must have been impressed by what he saw.

Striker Conor Jevon, who has flitted between the first team and the reserves this season finished off a flowing move after just two minutes to put the home side 2-0 up.

And it only took the home side six more minutes to add a second. Some neat work from midfielder Dom Panesar-Dower, who has been featuring for the club’s first team of late, allowed him add a second.

Weymouth could have even extended their lead even further but they hit the outside of a post just before the interval.

Jevon then added his second and Weymouth’s third with a blasted effort at the near post for 3-0 before the hosts then missed a penalty two minutes later.

Folland did respond with skipper Jamie Dover hitting a cross which looped over Ashley Weeks in the Terras’ goal and found the top corner, the striker was then substituted by the visitors straight after.

The visitors then hit the bar with an effort from range that Weeks got a touch to keep it out before Weymouth made it 4-1 through Sanchez Jansz-Baker.

Former Bridport man Sean Stewart then added to the tally to make it five and Baker got his brace 15 minutes from time as Bradley Asagba’s men ran out convincing winners.

Speaking after the game, Asagba told Echosport: “We are learning to manage games a little bit better now.

“That game, with the scoreline in the second half, could have been difficult for us but we managed it and handled it well and ended up with a good result.

He added: “I think after Christmas we have really turned the corner.

“Results haven’t necessarily suggested it but, in terms of our adaptation, there’s a bit more maturity and a bit more confidence about us.

“We have not really been able to get some of our strongest players on the pitch but, collectively, if we were to get out strongest team out I think we will have adjusted and turned the corner.”

The victory means the Terras sit 13th in the table, with 40 points from 30 league games played.
