RECORD-BREAKER Sam Roles is fearful that Charlton Down Cricket Club could be upping his match fees, due to hitting too many cricket balls out of sight!

The powerful batsman produced a record-breaking unbeaten double century in the Dorchester & District Evening League Cup quarter-final, when his side saw off Puddletown RFC to progress to the last four.

The sensational innings, in which he scored exactly 200 not out, came from just 65 deliveries – a scoring rate of more than three runs per ball.

Asked about the blistering show of hitting, Roles told Echosport: “The first ball I hit for four and I just kept on going.

“Our approach is basically hit out or get out. It just so happened that I hit every ball and didn’t get out in the end!

“It was one of those ones where I wasn’t really thinking about it, I just went out there with the attitude of ‘see ball, hit ball’ and it worked.

“The first hundred came off 37 balls and the second hundred came off 28 balls.

“I think I lost six cricket balls in the end, so it was a bit of an expensive evening for the club. Someone suggested putting my match fees up, but I said I didn’t like the idea of that!”

He added: “Bowling on Astro is so unforgiving for them (the bowlers), they can bowl on a length, bowl short, or fuller. If you are seeing it well on an Astro you can pick and choose where you want to hit it really.”

Batting first, Charlton Down totalled 286-3 from their 20 overs and bowled their opposition out for just 60 in reply.

Unsurprisingly, Roles’ knock is confirmed as a league record, and he also has previous for taking apart bowling attacks this term.

In Evening League games earlier this summer, he plundered 154 from 56 deliveries against Hazelbury Bryan, as well as a quick-fire 122 against Cerne Valley.

In the professional ranks, West Indies’ star Chris Gayle’s 175 is recorded as the highest individual t20 innings, for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Pune Warriors in April 2013.

There are reports of a player scoring 300 in a t20 fixture in India however. Mohit Ahlawat is believed to have become the first man to reach a triple ton, in a local game held in Delhi.

Milestones seem to be a motivating factor for Roles, with the club record 200 having already helped him reach 1,000 runs this summer for Charlton Down.

“I am usually away for half the season – last year I got 700-odd runs and missed out on being the club’s top run-scorer,” he added.

“I made it a mission of mine this season to play as many games as I could and make as much ground as I could.

“I held the (highest innings) record for Charlton Down of 150 last season, beat it this year with 154 and now I’m the only person to get a double-ton for Charlton Down.”

And cricket is not the only sport the young batsman excels in. He added: “I am on a golf scholarship out in America. Golf is my main sport and my cricket has improved because of the golf.

“I just go out there and play golf really. People get annoyed because I hack across the line and it comes off!”
