WEYMOUTH II 94-5 (19pts) beat WIMBORNE & COLEHILL IV 90 (3pts) by five wickets

WEYMOUTH Seconds ended a run of three defeats with a comfortable victory over spirited Wimborne & Colehill Fourths at Redlands in County Division Six.

Pete Gordon’s men were in irresistible form with the ball, bowling their opponents out for 90 as Tim Guyett (5-16) proved the pick of the home attack.

Weymouth then overcame a slight wobble in their reply to knock off the runs and register an excellent five-wicket win.

Fielding a weakened side due to first-team call-ups, the Seasiders won the toss and fielded first on a bowler-friendly drying wicket.

Tim Guyett generated great pace with a strong wind behind him and took a wicket with the very first ball of the match before taking two more wickets in the third over to leave Wimborne on 11-3.

Fellow opener Tom Anderson (1-13) also bowled with pace and accuracy and took a wicket in the fourth over leaving Wimborne struggling on 11-4.

Guyett completed his fifer before Ben Hunter (2-11) took a quick brace to leave Wimborne floundering on 50-8 off 20 overs.

Wimborne then applied themselves and some wayward bowling from Weymouth increased the score to 89 before Sam Greening took a wicket and produced a quality run out to dismiss Wimborne for 90.

Weymouth lost Tony Quayle early in their reply, before captain Pete Gordon was bowled for 13 to leave Weymouth’s second string on 32-2.

But Matt Batchelor, returning to cricket after a lengthy spell away from the game, played some quality shots and took the game to Wimborne, scoring from almost every delivery.

New batsman Andy Anderson struck his first two balls for four and increased the pressure on Wimborne, who later made a significant breakthrough by bowling Batchelor for a confident 21.

However, Guyett smashed two fours and won the game with a massive six as the Seasiders closed out the game in style.

Speaking after the contest, captain Pete Gordon was relieved with the victory.

He said: “It was a great performance from Tim Guyett but everyone played their part, including two important catches from youngster Josh Cardiff.

“We will need to be energetic and very focussed if we are to trouble league leaders Bere Regis next week.

“It will be a great chance for our young side to match themselves against the best in the division.”
