NEW Dorchester Town manager Steve Thompson expects the Magpies to have a “burning desire” to win every game as he prepares to oversee his first match in charge at Dunstable Town tomorrow (3pm).

Dorchester go into the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier game on a run of five straight league defeats and have only scored three goals in seven games.

That tally is the league’s joint-lowest with Dunstable, while the Magpies’ minus 20 goal difference is only better than Dunstable and Gosport, the teams directly below them in the table.

Speaking to Echosport, Thompson felt it was “important” to get a good result to open his tenure.

He said: “All games are important and that had to be the philosophy for everyone at the football club. Every game we should have a burning desire to win.

“We have got to go into the game doing something that helps us to stop conceding so many goals.

“I think any manager feels it’s important to win their first game because it takes a little bit of pressure off you, it does help. We all know football is full of pressure.”

With two points and a place separating Dorchester and tomorrow’s opponents, Thompson is eyeing a victory to extend that gap.

“It would be nice to beat Dunstable and get five points between us and them. People can see it’s an important game.

“We don’t want to drop too far behind and these players have got an opportunity to show me what they can do. What I want the players to do is the bare minimum that everyone gives 110% per cent.

“If we can do that and we can also pick things up from training tactically, hopefully that will be the difference between drawing or losing the game and winning it,” he said.

Thompson also revealed the style of play that Magpies’ supporters can expect to see during his reign.

He said: “The style of play that I’ve always worked on is a high energy and high tempo game. You do need to have a certain level of fitness to play that game.

“It will be very important to play at that level. I’m not saying that means they’re unfit. That’s the type of game I prefer. We’ll have to see whether that’s possible at the moment, if not hopefully it will be soon.”

Despite there being no official assistant-manager in place, Thompson insists he is “in no rush” to appoint a number two.

“I’m in no rush to make that decision. I’m quite comfortable on the coaching field and managing the team at the moment.

“It’s great to have a number two to give you the support, I know how important that is. There will be a number two in place but I want to work with Trevor (Senior) who is in situ at the moment and bounce off him, listen to his ideas.

“I just want to get on the coaching field and work hard to try and get a good result,” he said.

And Thompson admitted he had been watching Dorchester’s results since his Woking days.

He said: “I always take notice of Dorchester’s results. It’s a club that was in the Conference South only four years ago and in my first year at Woking we played Dorchester.

“It was only the one season we played them but we went in different directions.”
