Week five of the Weymouth Indoor Volleyball League saw some tight matches across all divisions which set up some decisive games next Tuesday, which will determine which division the teams will stay in for the remainder of the season.

The first game in Division One saw Portland Prison run out 3-1 winners against a determined Old Spa winning 25-23, 25- 19, 21-25, 25-19.

Sean Hendry and Ryan Stouts attacks ultimately proved too much, however the one set Old Spa took confirmed their position in the top division for the rest of the season much to their captain Carl Neal’s delight.

The second game saw Weatherbury A take Wildcats to task 3-0.

The Wildcats missed their main man as Rob Semmence struggled to kill the ball, whereas Ben Mills and Liam Tewkesbury found some great attacks for Weatherbury (25-22-25-17, 25-17) sending Wildcats down to Division Two.

Weatherbury B also fared well as they beat Diggers with Attitude 3-1 with an outstanding performance in a tight match as they came from a set down to win 24-26, 27-26, 25-20, 25-23.

The strong net play of David Patrick and backcourt play of Bex O’Neill and Lauren Edwards saw the Diggers unable to grind out a result.

In the second game of Division Two, last year’s overall league winners continued their winning form after their shock relegation a few weeks ago.

They were too strong for the newly promoted Malboro Renegades who played without fear and learned some valuable lessons while Helen Pearson was named player of the match.

Division Three saw SYNT beat CSSC Meerkats 3-0 as the Oldrid trio of mum Emma and sisters Lucy and Chloe created a great foundation with accurate passing and setting for their newly acquired hitters Jake Hetherington, Tom Coombs and James Mills.

The other game in Division Three saw Ultraballers come back from losing the first set to edge out ASM three sets to one, winning 22-25, 27-25. 25-15, 25-23.

Despite only being able to field five players the experience of on court leader Yannis Kotsiopolous saw them through the tighter moments in the game in what was a really entertaining match with many swings and roundabouts.

This sets up some interesting ties ahead of the final seeding games on Tuesday. There is all to play for in the lower divisions although Division One appears to be settled with Wildcats going down.
