THE final Monday of the Weymouth ADC Singles League will turn out to be the decider as three players stand a chance to claim the last play-off spot up for grabs.

It had looked like a dead certain spot for seventh place Mark Samways but over the last couple weeks results have gone against him and it gives eighth spot Chris Stones and ninth-placed Paul Dormer a chance to sneak in and claim a play-off place.

Samways’ night started with a 4-0 loss to Andrew McDermott who himself after a mid-season blip is back to looking strong favourite for the title as he reeled off a 13 and 16-dart leg on his way to victory.

Paul Paice then damaged Samways play-off spot even more when he took their game 4-2.

It was a big result and confidence boosting win for Paice who was trying to make a mends for his pointless week last time out.

This result was Paice’s second win of the night as he overcame Chris Burton 4-0 in their first match of the evening.

Pouncing on Samways’ two defeats and claiming three wins on the night, Stones has put himself one point behind Samways with a game in hand as he beat Chris Burton 4-1 then Scott Gannon 4-0 before taking on his closest rival for seventh spot, Dormer, in the final match of the night.

It was a match that had a lot of tension with both players knowing what was at stake but it was Stones who held his nerve when 3-2 up and a couple of missed darts from Dormer let him in to take double 16 and the two points.

Dormer’s night couldn’t have started any better winning the 1,001 shot-out in 38 darts and he then went on to defeat current leader Danny Aplin 4-2 in what was a high-scoring game.

Dormer went two up before Aplin had a 14 and 16-dart leg to draw level before going on to lose the next two legs and putting his top spot in jeopardy and a 13-dart leg in his second match saw Dormer win 4-1 against Matty Paice.

After a 4-0 win in his first match, McDermott once again was too strong for his next opponent Nigel Davies claiming a second 4-0 win of the night.

Davies, who was absent last week due to a shoulder injury, performed brilliantly well in his other three matches of the night, having to play four games on the night and all against top-five opposition.

He fought back from two-nil down against Arnie Quinn to draw level and then from 3-2 down and claim a draw with the highlight being Quinn taking out a 124 on the bull.

Next up for Davis was third-placed Andy Masters and he once again battled back from behind as Davies dug in deep and claimed another draw.

Davis ran out of steam in his third match because of his shoulder problem, and went down 4-1 to fifth- placed Simon Churchill, who picked up maximum points, starting with a 4-0 win against Gannon after a bad run last time out.

Third and fourth-placed Quinn and Masters shared the points in their clash in a match of two halves, with Quinn taking full control and going 3-1 up before Masters hit back in the fifth leg with a 14-darter and earned the hard fought draw.

Mel Burton, another who missed last week, won all three fixtures of the night as he beat Dave Butler 4-2, Wayne Jordan 4-1 and Matt Paice 4-0 to secure a finals spot.

Paice and Gannon shared the points in their match while Trevor Honnor, Simon Sharpe and Butler all drew two games each on the night while Mel Gregg earned a 3-3 draw against Sharpe.

The finals night is on Friday, March 16 at the Weymouth Angling Club, open from 7pm and the players toe the oche from 7.30pm.
