DORCHESTER 47

LYTCHETT MINSTER 0

DORCHESTER were made to work hard by Lytchett Minster before they earned yet another bonus point win, coming out 47-0 victors in their Wadworth 6X Dorset & Wilts One South clash.

With the wind and snow at their backs it was no surprise that the vast majority of the play in the first period was in and around the visitors’ 22. However, the Lytchett pack was holding its own and the backs were hustling their opposite numbers into a few handling errors to restrict the number of scoring chances.

But prop Dave Cottell opened the scoring followed by George Foot, Cameron Wills and a first try for flanker James Harries. James Baker added three conversions for a 26-0 lead at the break.

Lytchett now had the elements in their favour but any thoughts of a comeback were quickly put to bed as Foot finished a fine team move by the posts.

Winger Jamie Morgan then danced his way through the Lytchett midfield before full-back Jack Ward, showing real pace and skill down the right wing, chipped over the last defender and regathered the ball before touching down for the final try of the day.

Baker converted all three of the second-half tries to make the score appear more comfortable than in reality.

Dorchester used their bench in the second half with the evergreen Rich Bament taking to the field at fly-half along with Chris Elliott and Mark Adams to add bulk and experience to the front row.

With Dorchester still heading the table from Dorset Dockers by six points, the league title is in sight for the county town club.

Following the game, coach Rich Bament commented that he was keeping the squad grounded and focused on the job in hand.

On Saturday, Dorchester face Wimborne at Coburg Road (3pm), one of only two sides to beat them in the league this season.

Bament knows this will be a tough game and Wimborne will be looking to spoil the party at Dorchester.

With consistency and concentration the key, Bament will make sure training goes well this week and numbers are up for a strong run in to the end of the season.

Elsewhere, Dorchester’s A XV fell 41-19 to Dinton while the Gladiators’ game against Salisbury IV was postponed until April.

n The day started with Dorchester and Weymouth rugby clubs coming together for the second Men’s Rugby walk to raise funds for Weldmar Hospice. Both clubs’ respective chairmen took to the road for the walk.
