HAMBLE CLUB 5

PORTLAND UNITED 2

Bearwish 61, Mason 90+5og

PORTLAND United conceded five goals for the second successive game as they fell 5-2 at Hamble Club in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division.

Nathan Lynch scored a brace, while Jack McCarthy, Doug Rowe and Barry Mason rounded off the defeat for the depleted Blues, who were without seven players, who responded through Tom Bearwish and a late own-goal from Hamble’s Mason.

Within 15 minutes, the Blues were two goals down as Lynch took an early brace but Portland did not concede further throughout the half as they got into the game.

Bearwish gave the Blues hope in the 61st minute after Robinson Akumu got down the right-hand side with some great pace and squared it for a Bearwish strike to narrow the scores but Hamble responded in style.

Mason restored the two-goal lead for the Monks on the 75th minute, and Rowe sealed the three points for the home side 11 minutes later.

Injury time would prove frantic but ultimately fruitless for Portland as they again narrowed the score in the second minute of stoppage through a Mason own-goal from a Portland corner.

However, McCarthy fired in three minutes later to complete the scoring.

The result leaves Portland in 14th place, with 46 points, while their opponents stay 10th in the table.

Stuart Heath, who took the team alongside Chris Wilson as interim-manager Gary Bailey was unable to travel, said: “It is certainly not the week or performances that we wanted.”

Gary Bailey’s troops host Baffins Milton Rovers today (3pm).
