DORCHESTER Town boss Steve Thompson had “no complaints” about his side’s 1-0 Evo Stik Southern Premier Division loss to Slough Town at the Avenue Stadium.

An 84th minute goal from Perry Coles deprived the Magpies of earning a point against a side guaranteed a play-off position in the post-season.

Thompson’s men now face a lengthy trip to Hitchin for their penultimate game of the season tonight (7.45pm).

Coming into the game, Thompson had called for his side to maintain the control they had grasped over previous matches, but the Magpies’ boss admitted that during the first half Slough turned the tables on his team.

He told Echosport: “I thought they controlled the first half although they didn’t create any chances really. They had two good chances at the start of the second half and we didn’t create much first half.

“There was one long-distance shot from Aaron Rodriguez which the keeper did well to tip round. Second half we looked more dangerous, we had two or three (chances) that just needed the final ball.

“Of course the great chance was the one-on-one for Alex Stafie, but no complaints really. I thought Slough were the better team and we weren’t at our best.

“It was a difficult day, a bobbly pitch. But again we’ve fought well, stuck in there and showed a lot of effort and determination even if the quality wasn’t always there.”

Asked whether the Magpies had given Slough a better game than their 2-0 defeat to the Rebels in January, Thompson believed that to be the case.

He said: “Far better. Slough have got a very experienced team. Although there’s not many youngsters out there they’re all experienced players.

“When you compare that to our boys we’ve got a lot of youngsters who are still developing and becoming better players.”

Looking to the Hitchin clash, Thompson is eyeing a continuation of the recent improvement in performances from his players, and said little could be learned from Hitchin’s 4-1 win over Dorchester in December.

He said: “It’s about performances in the last two games. You want to produce good performances and quite often that ends up in decent results.

“(Hitchin) are in roughly the same position then as they are now, so they’ve obviously kept it going reasonably well.”

Luke Winsper is a doubt for the Canaries clash, after pulling up in the warm-up with an ankle injury.
