DAVE Hanger completed a stunning hat-trick of victories at the Indoor Bowls Finals held at Wellworthy.

On-song Hanger took the spoils in the men's singles, pairs and open triples disciplines.

In the novice singles, ladies' outdoor bowls champion Carol Dixon and Mike Tidby were pitted against each other, but Dixon ran out a comfortable winner.

After eight ends, Dixon was 13-1 up before Tidby came back with a three and two ones to make it 14-6. Dixon then made her experience count, running away with it to make it 23-7 after 17 ends over 90 minutes.

On the other rink, Dave and Jenny Clark were playing in the Open Triples Final with the talented and experienced Joe Wahnon, against the very experienced trio of Alan Goodwin, Roy Burnett and Hanger.

This match turned out to be far the most competitive of the weekend. After losing the first end, Goodwin, Burnett and Hanger eased to a 5-1 lead but the Clarks and Wahnon came back to go 8-7 up after 11 ends.

But Goodwin, Burnett and Hanger stormed ahead go 15-11 up with two ends to go. However, the Clarks and Wahnon fought back with a three and a one to draw the game 15-15 in the 18th and last end. A tense decider was then played and Hanger took the jack with his last wood for an overall 16-15 victory.

Burnett and Hanger went again in the men’s pairs final against Jim Greatrex and Tony Batty. After 10 ends, Burnett and Hanger were just 9-8 up, but they soon recovered to go 24-8 up by the 15th end, before winning 30-12 after 20 ends.

In the mixed pairs final, Ian and Della Marshall were up against Brian Hawker and June Gillespie. After six ends, the score was 5-5 but Hawker and Gillespie were in-form, going up 14-5 after 12 ends.

The Marshalls won a four on the 15th end but then dropped a six on the 17th, coming back again with a five on the 20th and last end to no avail as Hawker and Gillespie took the match 27-15 overall.

In the ladies’ singles final, Daphne Gale took on Rita Wilks and they were level at 3-3 after four ends, but after 10 ends Wilks had edged ahead to go up 10-4.

Gale then made a strong comeback with a three and a four to go up 11-10 but was unable to score another point after this. Wilks stormed back to take the next five ends to win 21-11.

The Men’s Singles saw Peter Beardsley, up against defending champion Hanger, gunning for a treble victory.

Beardsley got off to a good start going 4-2 up after four ends including a three in the opening end.

Hanger picked up a three in the fifth end and then dominated. Apart from conceding a four in the 13th end, Beardsley kept the game fairly tight until the 21st end, when Hanger eventually won 22-10.
