DORCHESTER Town boss Steve Thompson admitted he is working to resolve the Magpies’ lack of a specialist striker.

Last season, midfielder Sam Lanahan, now at Gosport Borough, was the club’s top scorer with nine goals from 29 games.

And Thompson told Echosport that, while he continues to search for a marksman, a concrete signing remains “elusive”.

He said: “We did have certain issues in that we didn’t have a prolific top scorer. We’d like to get a striker in, but that is proving elusive, so that same problem could still exist, but hopefully not.

“I just want the players to put in the effort that they did last year and hopefully a lot of young players will be better off with a year’s extra experience, and maybe we can get a striker to add to that.”

Thompson also conceded that he had missed out on signing a “League Two” striker already.

He said: “When we’ve only got four players under contract you don’t disregard what you’ve got.

“I’ve spoken to two, one who’s got a season in League Two under his belt and one who’s played regularly for six years, a league above what we’re in now. Unfortunately they’ve decided on other options.

“I was speaking to a player from the National League South, but he’s decided to remain there.

“I’ve also spoken to two more players that might come in and they’re from lower leagues. It’s tough at the moment because I need to know that players are better than what I’ve got to bring them in.”
