DORCHESTER Town boss Steve Thompson collected a second win in as many days when England thrashed Taiwan 4-1 in their Seniors’ World Cup Group B clash at the True Arena in Hua Hin.

Thompson, 55, a prolific midfielder for the likes of Yeovil Town, Slough and Wycombe Wanderers during his career, made his first start in the competition, albeit in an unfamiliar role.

The Magpies’ manager lined up at left-back, wearing the number six shirt, with Eastleigh boss Andy Hessenthaler and Alex Russell patrolling the central midfield ranks.

England, who are reigning champions of the annual event, took an early lead when Barry Hayles burst past the Taiwan defence to score.

And boss Paul Bell’s men claimed a 2-0 half-time lead when Peter Beagrie stepped up to fire home his second penalty in as many games.

Former Weymouth midfielder Lee Elam, captain on the day, swiftly made it 3-0 after the break before a breathless finish ensued.

Rod Thornley extended England’s lead to 4-0 before Taiwan reduced their arrears with a consolation goal late on.

Victory hands England automatic qualification as group winners, where they will play the Group A runners-up in a semi-final at 12pm UK time on Friday.

England face New Zealand today in their final group match (10am).
