NEW children’s yoga sessions are being held at Redlands Community Sports Hub on Saturday mornings.

The sessions, for four to six-year-olds and seven to 11-year-olds, are being run by Debbie Ross-Mackenzie, who has taught at a range of schools across Weymouth.

Ross-Mackenzie said: “It is one of the things that I think will grow, I think there is definitely a market for it.

“I always wanted to specialise in children’s yoga and looking around Dorset, I think Dorchester have a kids’ yoga club but there is nothing in Weymouth at all so there is quite a big market for it.”

She teaches yoga every other week at Holy Trinity School for Years Three and Four and has started holding enrichment sessions at Chickerell Primary Academy and an after- school club for St Andrew’s in Preston.

The session for the younger children starts at 10.30am and runs for 45 minutes and is immediately followed by the session for the older children.

Ross-Mackenzie added: “I just thought it would be something really good for schools to do, for the children for their mental health, their wellbeing, their relaxation and keeping them healthy really.”

“The feedback has been amazing, the kids absolutely love it.

“You could not just run a kids’ yoga class how you would an adult class because they would be bored.

“You have got to keep them engaged.” and just make it fun and so almost like you are disguising it so they are doing yoga without really knowing they are doing yoga. So they are increasing their strength, increasing their flexibility. The schools are really good.”
