WYKE Smugglers jumped above their opponents Buglers into third place in Division One thanks to some superb defensive pressure and equally impressive attacking.

Smugglers were quick to secure a two-goal lead, however Buglers fought back to even out the score. The teams were evenly-matched in the middle of the quarter, but Smugglers upped their game, and superb shooting from GA, Elizabeth Courtice, allowed them to end the quarter one-goal ahead.

Buglers came back fighting, with strong attack and excellent use of rebounds to create crucial scoring opportunities. Wyke were undeterred, showing their skill in the D by reclaiming rebounds to carve out a small lead. Buglers made a great effort in the third quarter, showing brilliant control of the ball and making key interceptions to close the gap slightly.

Wyke dominated the court in the final quarter. Determined attacking play saw the ball move effortlessly to their shooters, while tough defensive pressure prevented Buglers from keeping possession for long and their hard work paid off, and Wyke were able to claim the victory.

Premier Division

BELLE CONSTRUCTION 51

NEW BODY FITNESS 34

BELLE Construction continued their domination of the Premier Division with a superb victory to ensure they remain unbeaten in the league.

New Body made a good start, working the ball well around the court with accurate passing, despite Belle’s attempts to intercept. This seemed to fuel Belle’s determination, upping their game across the court; Shooting duo Laura Bucke and Kat Wilberforce took advantage of every scoring opportunity to carve out a small lead for their team.

Both teams came back with great energy. New Body showed their strength in the mid-court, with Lisa Martin (WA) and Ellen Blackwood (C) feeding the ball well into their shooters to lower the score-difference slightly. Tactical changes at half time allowed Belle to up their defensive pressure to prevent New Body’s scoring opportunities.

Belle kept up their strong defence and made some well-timed interceptions to further increase their lead and claim the victory.

Premier Division

GEORGE BAR & GRILL 72

BAY FENCING 20

GEORGE Bar thrashed Bay Fencing in a one-sided encounter that comfortably saw the fourth-placed side rout Fencing, who are rooted to the bottom of the table.

George set off with flawless play, quickly establishing a lead, thanks to some dominant centre court passing.

Bay worked hard throughout the match. Centre court players displayed great commitment, looking for every opportunity to create turnover balls. GK, Corinne March, worked tirelessly to stem the flow of goals flowing through George’s goal circle. Bays GA, Mandy Hawkins, made every effort to score but faced formidable defence from George’s GD, Juliette Frampton.

Bay made tactical changes in the third quarter in an attempt to disrupt George’s expert play, but it was not enough to slow George down. Despite this, Bay’s players continued to encourage and support each other, showing true team spirit. George continued to use their incredible skill and understanding of the game to build their lead further.

The final quarter saw both teams play hard but it was George who took the honours with a well-deserved win.

Division Two

MERAKI 39

OJOs B 20

MERAKI claimed a well fought win against OJOs B to get off the foot of the Division Two table, surging ahead in the latter stages of the match to pick up a valuable win.

OJOs B came out fighting, turning over Meraki’s centre pass and quickly pulling ahead. Meraki settled in and managed to collect loose balls, sending them down court to GS Kelly Riglar, who potted some spectacular long-range shots, putting Meraki back in the lead.

OJOs B made some changes to their attack in the second quarter, but Meraki GK, Emma Brookes, made it difficult for OJOs B’s shooters to score. Excellent passing into the circle from WA, Nina Rodd, helped OJOs B bring the goal difference back to within one.

Meraki’s sustained defensive pressure really paid off in the third quarter, creating turnovers and building a solid lead.

OJOs B fought hard right up to the final whistle but Meraki continued to pull ahead, winning the match by 19 goals.
