MILLEN Hurrion’s former coach Julian Lawes was glad to see him back at Weymouth Tennis Club, despite suffering a 6-1 exhibition demolition at the hands of his former student.

Hurrion, who spent a day at the club recently, now studies and plays at Gardner Webb University in North Carolina, where he won four awards in his Freshman year.

Lawes said: “It was a good turnout. Basically Millen did a little coaching session with the juniors in the morning and then we just did a bit of an exhibition afterwards.

“It was really good, a few people came to watch and a lot of the adult members came down to watch so it was really good.”

Hurrion, a former student at Budmouth, was selected as Freshman of the week five times and secured the number two spot behind Maximilian Scholl.

With Scholl he has achieved a doubles ranking of 67 as the number one pairing in their first year together, which is the highest doubles ranking in Gardner Webb University history.

Describing his defeat on the day, Lawes said: “I only held serve once, we only played a set so he beat me 6-1.

“It was very difficult to get any of his serves back.

“They must be coming down at least 120-125 mph, I reckon. They were noticeably faster than I have seen recently.“

Lawes was Hurrion’s first coach and taught him for four years.

Lawes said: “Millen is far too good at the moment, he is playing really really well.

“It is good to see him back in Weymouth and doing a bit for the club and help promote us.

“He is just so much bigger, stronger and faster with all of the training that he has done in America and he is playing some really good players over there and his skill level has definitely improved since the last time I have seen him.

“To go from where he started to where he is now, I have never had a player go as far as him and has got as good as him.

“He is playing some world-ranked players at the moment and doing a good job.”
