PETER Wilson is not worrying about the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 as he prepares for the final selection shoot for GB in Nuthampstead.

Wilson, from Dorchester, will compete in the shoot where he will have to achieve two scores of 119 or above out of 125.

Wilson said: “From my perspective there is no point worrying about Tokyo or quota places until you are in the team so I am just going to get my head down and do my thing.”

Wilson will be aiming to earn his spot in the team to eventually hope to compete in the Olympic Trap, and won gold for GB in the Double Trap event during the London 2012 Olympics and must shoot above 119.

Wilson said: “I have done that once, shooting 121 in North Wales and I have basically got a couple more chances this year, once here at Nuthampstead and once in Italy at the back end of next month.

“That is technically my competitive season over, because I am not in the Great Britain team, having taken time out, you sort of fall outside of the rankings.

“I have just got to keep working and chipping away.”

Wilson, should he be successful, will then work towards earning a quota place, which Wilson describes as: “The illustrious Charlie and the Chocolate Factory golden ticket to the Olympics.”

Wilson would then have to defend it until 2020.

Wilson added: “Everyone is fighting to get into the Great Britain team this year really for next year. Next year is the quota place year and once you are in the team you stand a chance of winning a quota place, but you need to be top 10 consistently in the world to guarantee yourself a quota.

“Once you have won that quota you have won it for GB and that means you need to defend it and prove to the selectors that you are the best person to take to the Olympics in Tokyo.

“From my perspective, there is no point worrying about Tokyo or quota places until you are in the team so I am just going to get my head down and do my thing.”

This perspective has helped Wilson to relax and enjoy his shooting, which he believes is only going to make him perform better.

Wilson said: “You have got to keep it in perspective and just try and enjoy it. I often find that when you are enjoying what you are doing you tend to do it that bit better.

“If you look at the England World Cup team, Gareth Southgate has said on a number of occasions we just want the boys to go out and enjoy it and I think he is absolutely right.

“A lot of people may not understand that but you do your job better if you are happy, enjoying the experience and the challenge.

“You tend to raise the bar and your own game.”
