WEYMOUTH captain Harry Mitchell has called for the Seasiders’ all-rounders to step up ahead of their County Division Two meeting with Kingston Lacy at Redlands tomorrow (10am).

Like several others around the county, Weymouth are holding their match early in a bid to watch the majority of England’s World Cup quarter-final clash with Sweden (3pm).

For Mitchell though, his immediate concern surrounds a light batting line-up.

Only openers John Wilson and Neil Walton, plus Paul Collins, are seen as recognised batsmen in the absence of the unavailable Dom Webb, Simon Browne, Kieron Womble and Tom England.

He told Echosport: “We’re very short, but hopefully more people can step up and be counted.

“For a couple of the all-rounders like Sappy (Jack Sapsworth), Jack Taylor, me and Lloyd (Beals) it’s a chance for us to make a big score.

“We’re missing a few key players and the batting order is going to be stretched. Everyone is going to have to step up.”

Lacy have managed just two wins all season and sit in ninth position, with the Seasiders having beaten them by 81 runs on the opening day of the season.

Mitchell said: “I don’t think we can take them for granted. In this league anyone can beat anyone – we can’t take anyone lightly.

“They might come down and be really up for it and catch us off guard, that will be it then. We’ve got to be looking at 18 points-plus against them, otherwise the gap is too big (to the teams above).

“Teams like Witchampton and Marnhull will beat teams like this. If we lose we’ll be forced to beat all of them and that’s a big ask.”

Weymouth make four changes from the side that beat Beaminster by three wickets, with Webb, Browne, Paul Webb and Sami Rathnayake replaced by Collins, Taylor, Andy Jeffreys and Tom Reed.
