NEWLY-FORMED Martinstown Ladies have completed their first competitive event at the Beaminster Festival in style, winning two of their three games.

Competing against a range of ladies’ teams which included Dorchester, Poole, Beaminster and Sherborne, they acquitted themselves well.

Commenting on the performance, team captain Tanya Howlett said: “I am tremendously proud of the way the team performed. We won two out of our three games, all of which were played with great commitment and enthusiasm.

“It is remarkable given that the section was only formed at the beginning of the season and that most of us had not played before, not to mention our understanding of the game.

“I must thank our two coaches, Stuart Dawson and Ben Carter who have succeeded in getting us up to speed in such a short space of time.

“Their knowledge and skills in the game – and their patience, has enabled us to arrive at this level in such a short space of time.”

The nomination for Martinstown team player of the match went to Cloe Carter-Miles following her outstanding bowling and fielding performance.

Howlett also thanked the club for the tremendous encouragement the team have received from everyone.

She continued: “We will certainly be entering future competitions and would welcome any girls or ladies who would like to join in our Monday evening training sessions at Martinstown’s ground, regardless of age or ability.”

Club chairman, David Gargrave said: “The club is delighted that the girls’ and ladies’ section has proved so successful. To reach this level of competitiveness such a short space of time is no mean feat and is indicative of the commitment that both players and coaches have made.

“We can say with justification that cricket at Martinstown is now very much a family affair.”
