WEYMOUTH youngster Bailey Rowe became the youngest scorer in for the British Virgin Islands’ national team in a superb 3-2 win against Dutch St Maarten.

Rowe, 16, is currently with the BVI national team in Dutch St Maarten in preparation for a tournament, warming up with a training camp before this friendly win against Dutch St Maartin.

St Maarten started impressively dominating much of the early play but once the BVI got settled in they forced an own goal after a cross in from Troy Ceasar.

BVI continued to press and looked dangerous as they put together several half chances with some excellent combination plays in the latter part of the first half.

In the 35th minute, the BVI extended their lead through Jordan Johnson after a neat passing move.

Despite St Maartin scoring, the BVI were still able to end the half leading by 2-1.

After the interval, BVI started tentatively and this time St Maartin capitalised and made it 2-2.

BVI manager John Reilly then introduced Rowe, a former Terras’ youngster, Kevin Fisher, and Liam Blok which put the BVI back in control.

After 65 minutes, Rowe made it 3-2 after picking up possession after a neat interchange before lifting the ball over the St Maarten centre-back before slotting the ball past the onrushing keeper to secure history.

Wilson and Fisher had a few near chances late on in the second half but neither were able to convert.

St Maartin also made a late press but the BVI defence proved to be up to the task as they held on for their first victory against the hosts since 2011.

BVI coach Neville said: “An excellent performance carrying on from some great work in this week’s training camp.

“The players have been really receptive to the information given and have really bonded and grown together as a unit.

“It was also really pleasing to include six teenagers in the squad which, along with the talent coming through at the age groups, bodes really well. The project is to build a long term sustainable program that will produce players for years to come. I would say we are a long way ahead of where we thought we would be at this time. I believe that is testimony to the hard work from all of the FA staff and players and it shows the future is bright.”
