WEYMOUTH powerlifter Nigel Orme charged to the AWPC World Championship title in Manchester, completing a stunning eight out of nine lifts.

New Masters M4 world champion Orme, who competed with a chest infection, now adds to the British Masters title he picked up in May.

Orme, 57, had a clean bill of health in the squats, succeeding in all three attempts to record a best lift of 90kg.

In the bench press, he managed 80kg before attempting a British record of 87.5kg but despite lifting the mass, could not lock his arms out for a new record mark.

Orme, of the New Body Fitness gym, then successfully lifted all three weights in the deadlift, managing a best of 140kg for a combined tally of 310kg.

Speaking to Echosport about his Worlds triumph, Orme admitted he “thoroughly enjoyed” the occasion.

He said: “Considering I actually had a chest infection I said ‘I’ll see how it goes’. I could feel it coming on – luckily it didn’t come on too quick.

“It was a good, fun day. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I just wanted to go there and compete. The plan was to go out and do one of each lift – I would have been happy with that. It just turned out better than I expected on the day.”

Orme also praised the professionalism of the event, adding that athletes were free of distractions during their lifts.

He said: “It was probably the best-run competition I’ve ever been to, they thought of everything.

“In a lot of comps you get people in the way, but if you weren’t lifting you simply weren’t allowed, so you didn’t have people walking in front of you.

“I was up against a Mexican lad (Saul Espinosa) and we always knew who was doing what.”

Orme, who came out of retirement to compete in Manchester, is now aiming to rest a damaged shoulder before a return to competition in two years’ time, when he will qualify for the M5 category.

He said: “I need to heal up my shoulder and get it done properly – I’m certainly not going to compete all of this year.

“I’m not going to stop lifting – I love training anyway. I’ll just cut out a couple of the main powerlift exercises to give my shoulder a chance.”
