Terras ladies offer a feast of football

WEYMOUTH Football Club's women and girls' section will take centre stage at the Wessex Stadium tonight in a festival of football.

The event is designed to raise awareness of the female game and to allow people to see just how good some of the Terras' players really are.

The festival will start at 4.30pm when girls from the newly-formed Weymouth Football in the Community Girls' League play a series of exhibition matches.

League games are played on Saturdays at Redlands with players ranging from Year Three to Year Six.

Eight sides, encompassing approximately 90 children, are currently participating and as well as learning the game they are also having plenty of fun.

At 6pm Weymouth Under-15s will then take on their counterparts from Blandford.

The Terras have won numerous trophies since their formation including league championships and tournament titles.

They are also the reigning Dorset County Cup holders and have several outstanding prospects who will be making the step into ladies' football next season.

That match against the Royals will then be followed at 7.45pm by Weymouth Ladies' penultimate league game of the season against Donhead.

It is a must-win game for the Terras who are looking to retain the Dorset Women's League title they won last year. Victory will set up a final-game decider for the championship at Purbeck, which will take place on Sunday (2.15pm).

Football in the Community officer Tim Davis, who has organised the festival, said: "I would like to say thank you to Malcolm Curtis and Gary Calder for allowing us to stage tonight's event which is vital to the development of women's and girls' football in Weymouth.

"As a lot of people know Weymouth Ladies is a very ambitious and progressive club who will be looking to gain promotion next season into the South West Women's League.

"To do this and be successful we need to build a solid infrastructure and we are using the festival to show both the local community and the local business community what women's and girls' football is all about and how popular it is in the town.

"We have invited a number of prospective sponsors to attend but I would like to send out an open invitation to any business in the area to send a representative to come and see us tonight and listen to the plans we have.

"There are a large number of sponsorship packages available to suit every budget from just £50 upwards.
