WEYMOUTH skipper Tony Worle hailed his side's performance at Monmouth Avenue on Saturday but thinks "there is still room for improvement."

Leading 10-3 at the break the Seasiders stepped up a gear in the second half with 19-year-old flanker George Carter marking his debut with a try imme-diately after the restart that fly-half Dave Allan converted.

That score seemed to break the visitors' resistance as before then they had given as good as they got with Dan Udell scoring a penalty in response to two tries from home hooker James Borrington.

As Weymouth tightened their grip on proceedings lock Rich Polley was next to touch down followed by giant prop Tim Comben with the first of a pair of tries converted by Allan.

The hosts then mounted another onslaught only to turn the ball over and the Villagers made best use of the gifted possession with Josh Hiscock running half the length of the field to ground the ball for a deserved try.

Comben crossed for his second touchdown of the afternoon followed by scrum half Craig Barther to make the score 41- 8.

With full-time beckoning, Barther then burst clear again to complete the scoring and a well-deserved brace.

Worle, whose side have now won two out of two in Dorset & Wilts Division One, said: "That was our best performance so far and I would like to welcome full back Steve Calbraith and young George Carter who both made their debuts.

"George in particular is a very talented sportsman. Football clubs have been courting him and he is also a quality amateur boxer and it is up to us to convince him that rugby is the game for him.

"Our pack also did well today and in the early stages of the game when Puddletown were coming at us I kept telling the forwards that if we kept up the tempo then our effort would pay off in the latter stages and that is just what happened.

"I noticed that there were a couple of visitors from other clubs in this division coming to have a look at us, so I hope their trip was worth it but I can promise them that there is lot more to come from Weymouth this season."

Puddletown began their campaign the previous week with a 15-5 success over Wimborne and their coach Pete Gordon is remaining upbeat.

He added: "I could not fault our effort. We played two competitive quarters, however, a poor quarter around half time handed the initiative to them and all credit to Weymouth.

"This was a tough test for us and shows the standard we need to achieve if we are to reach our objective of a top half finish. We look forward very much to the return leg."
